Headed for Olympics? Beware of Big Brother
Olympic Attendees Will Be Bugged and Searched, U.S. State Department Says
If you're planning on attending this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing, expect your hotel room to be bugged and searched while you're not there.
That's one of the warnings in a new fact sheet on the 2008 Olympics issued today by the U.S. State Department to Americans who intend to go to the games that are being hosted by the Chinese government.
"All visitors should be aware that they have no reasonable expectation of privacy in public or private locations," the fact sheet says. "All hotel rooms and offices are considered to be subject to on-site or remote technical monitoring at all times. Hotel rooms, residences and offices may be accessed at any time without the occupant's consent or knowledge."
This is similar to advice that U.S. officials visiting China follow. The U.S. military has been increasingly worried about Chinese electronic surveillance capabilities.
It’s awful nice of the Chinese Government to go to so much effort to make American tourists feel at home during the Olympics.

I'm not planning to attend, but I wonder how amused such searchers would be to discover armed mousetraps hidden away in drawers and taped under table edges...
They have already busted up terroristic plans intended to do harm at the Olympics, and lord knows what they havent found. You liberals always are quick to blame any Gov't for these types of invasions of privacy.... but what about the idiotic, immoral nut jobs that caused this reaction to begin with.
But you are confused grasshopper....are you saying the Chinese Gov't has uncover plots with their spying? or are you buying the load of donkey dung that the Bushies are pushing about all the "plot" they have uncovered with the illegal wiretapping they have performed?
Secondly, liberal bashing? first I am hardly liberal, I go much further then any modern day liberal would in my distaste of Gov't interference in individual liberty and my belief that our current regime has only the interests of big business in mind when they make decisions. I also go much further then any modern day liberal would in my thought on what is appropriate punishment for certain crimes. You see I believe the death penalty should be used in any case of pedophilia, all violent crime with a weapon and the list goes on. Not a very liberal view.
My problem with the death penalty is how it is grossly over used based on race.
It is all about perceptions isn' it! Most of your postings give the perception that you are a liberal.
I personally have no problem with any Gov't spying if 1) it helps keep me safe. and... 2) I have nothing to hide. If they want to know which porn site I go to (as long as it does not involve children) then let em check.
I truly believe that our Gov't know half of what the terrorist fanatics of this world are planning. and that scares me!
correction in above posting.... should say "our Gov't DOES NOT know half...."
Sorry.
I was reading the comment by junueabox and I began to wonder why you feel so safe if the government monitors our communications. You assume that you are doing nothing wrong, and by todays standards that may be correct. This may not be the case in the future, Take for example if one party wants to maintain their control on the power of the government and they use this monitoring to build a list of people who espouse views different from their own, perhaps they could even pass laws banning speech that opposes their views, than your past surfing habits may be used to put you on some future terrost list, or perhaps religios groups gain control and decide to round up those who surf the internet for porn and cleanse our society of porn loving individuals. I find it odd that when liberals speak out about ending the war we are waving the white flag an dsurrendoring, but we get no credit for the courage to stand up to the collective fears of our nation and not allow our freedoms to be taken. There will always be risks in living life, but I would rather face the risk with my freedom than relinquish them for some psuedo safety.
